Ok, so two of the wingers many Arsenal fans would like to see at the Emirates went tet-a-tet in the Port of Rotterdam tournament last night. The game saw an energetic Drenthe largely outshine the slightly sedate Quaresma, in an uneventful 0-0. With this in mind, events off the field of play were more interesting to comment on....

Raphael Benitez was at the game with Liverpool competing in the tournament, Arsene Wenger had made the short trip up from Amsterdam, (no word on Frank Arnesen, but with Robben likely to move to Madrid, you can bet your left-testicle that he was also snooping around too).
So who is likely to show their hand first. Well, Benitez has already spend big on the wings with the acquisition of Benayoun and Babel, and with Liverpool able to field about five teams of midfielders, does he have room for more players? So that leaves Chelsea, and Arsenal (Madrid having already ditched their interest in Drenthe) . Will Wenger strengthen in the wing position before the transfer window closes, and he usually leaves it late? Will we see Drenthe teaming up with ex-Feyenord and fellow Holland international, Robin Van Persie next season?

I think given Drenthe's age he would fit in well with the squad of players Wenger is building. He would be a massive addition...
I'm really excited as to the potential of this team.
I would love to see this guy in an Arsenal shirt. I saw him in the u-20 tournament and I thought he was the best player in the Dutch team (including Babel). A real live-wire. Under AW he can become even better.
Having said all this, I hope if we buy someone it's Martins. I am a big fan and he's at a good age. Drenthe is still young and not ready yet to help out this season as much as I would like a player to. No more players 'in trantition' please...
The only way Drenthe will sign for Arsenal is if Chelsea pull out of the running or if he insists he wants to go to Arsenal, as Chelsea will offer better wages. Does look a very good player though, & Wenger would only improve him.
Martins?! I'd have to disagree with you there. He does have pace & power & scores spectacular goals, but I don't think he's a great goalscorer and he's probably about 30 already and goes AWOL every now & then!
Bugger oh well - I think clubs that didn't put a bid in for Drenthe will really really regret it in the future.
I for one am gutted, and feel that we should have gone for him either earlier or put in a bid of at least 10M. In the current market, that would have got you Stuart Downing...so how much better is Drenthe!! nuff said
