Arsenal in clear run for "the Apache"

Add to Technorati Favorites

CARLOS TEVEZ last night officially turned down a move to Inter Milan — opening the door for a £20million switch to Arsenal. Italians Inter had given Tevez a deadline to make his decision over a move to Serie A.

However Kia Joorabchian, who owns the West Ham striker’s transfer rights, said:

“Inter put a deadline on the decision and Carlos was not prepared to meet that cut-off point.”
Tevez is also widely quoted as being interested in a move to Arsenal (who incidentally Joorabchian allegedly supports). With the opportunity to play as a main striker for one of the biggest & attacking oriented clubs - certainly seems to appeal to the man.

"I know people are now talking about Arsenal and obviously that is something I am excited about," said Tevez in the Sun.

"It's another big club and the good thing is I wouldn't have to move out of London. I also already know English football and I like it.

"Arsenal's style is more technical than physical, so I could fit in no problem.

However, Tevez also hinted that he would much prefer Inter over Madrid.
“Inter is a great club. There is a true possibility that I will wear the Nerazzurri colours next season. It’s also true that Real Madrid are interested in my services, but my agent knows exactly how I feel about it - better Inter than Real.”

Carlos Tevez Arsenal Transfer Rumour

Having seemingly turned down a move to Inter Milan it would now appear Arsenal are in prime position to sign him. With manager Arsene Wenger currently on holiday in France and Tevez currently on international duty with Argentina at the Copa America, it is unlikely a deal will be made for some time.....

Who will take up Henry's mantle?

Add to Technorati Favorites

So it happened, in the end a rather sombre departure of Arsenal's greatest striker...Henry has not left with a bang but with a wimper.

I'm split between writing a piece summarising all his past glories but realise this is probably being replicated many times on other blogs as I write, so I will not dwell in the past and I suggest the current members of the Arsenal board do the same. Instead I would prefer to look at who we could possibly get to fill Henry's rather large boots.

The first chink of light in the otherwise gloomy clouds on the horizon is the growth and development of Robin Van Persie, as a player I think he can now grow into the vacuum left by the departing Henry. He, as I pointed out earlier, was the top marksman in the premiership in terms of goals per minutes played (it is indeed unfortunate that he did not get a full season to test himself fully). When Henry was once quizzed on who he thought was the most technically gifted player in the Arsenal squad he replied that this was Van Persie by some distance. The only issue is whether at 24 he is ready for the challenge. The other caveat I have is he lacks the the outright speed that Henry had and as such not the complete striker, but with ball at foot he is right up there.

Robin Van Persie

This leads me onto Theo Walcott. Pace he may have to burn but I worry how some fans seem to think he will simply step into the Henry role at such a young age. We would all love this to happen (next season people are welcome to give me some stick here if I'm wrong) but I'll go as far a saying this is simply not going to happen! I see him playing a big role in Arsenal's future as long as he is given the space and freedom to develop in his own time.

So what of outside the current team? There is a clear need now to sign both a left sided winger and now a experienced top level striker, someone who is in fact super-super class... My preference for a winger would be a young quality player - someone we can look to develop with the rest of the youth team, I would prefer a really direct player like Royston Drenthe or Alessandro Rosina. In terms of a striker, rumour has it we may be looking at Nicolas Anelka. It is not without a certain amount of reservation and irony that Henry's replacement should be his predecessor. I always looked at Anelka and thought what-if? I'm sure he probably looks at himself and thinks the same. Whether he can make a go of it is another question, and food for thought.

Others mooted replacements include: Bendtner (totally unproven), Owen (injury prone and overpriced), Martins (fast but lacks consistency), Torres (way too expensive), and Eto (won't leave the Nou Camp unless there is a major bust up next season - however with Henry sold for 16M perhaps we have a first refusal when Barca sell).

In my opinion, the board should be held responsible for the current predicament, they've played their cards and I think they've now a lot to prove to the fans. The minimum expected now is for them to secure Wenger's future at the club - even if this involves getting Stan Kroenke's support. With Wenger secured we can look to building the current crop of young talent into the worlds best side... THEY MUST NOT PROCRASTINATE, THE TIME FOR ACTION IS NOW!

To conclude we should try not to let the last few months blight the memory of Henry's contribution to the club... here's a reminder of the great man.

Ending on a more cheerful note, in other news we are linked with Roma's Alberto Aquilani, a deadball specialist that would make Gareth Bale's admirers drool. He was another player who looked really good in the recent U21 championships....

Fairweather Reyes saves Madrid's bacon

Add to Technorati Favorites

It's been a strange season at Real Madrid, arguably it should have gone so wrong for them.lets face it they were rubbish. First Beckham hounded out of England and Madrid side is pressed back into service with good effect igniting Madrid's flapping season, just as Barca's turns tits-up. Next Jose Reyes labelled surplus to requirement at the Bernabeu, returning for the final game of the season as a substitute for Beckham scores twice to secure the title for Madrid..lucky? Well at least an Arsenal player has soured Barcelona's season, and that's something to smile about.

Jose Antonio Reyes

Yes I believe Reyes is a very good player, but not one in the Capello mould. This however may not matter after last night's heroics. I read this morning that his signing from Arsenal has become one of the first demands the Madridista's have made.

This is all good news for Wenger, who with a wry smile across his face, can now checkmate Ramon Calderon and his cronies. After trying to extort Arsenal over Reyes's price for the best part of the last 12 months, it'll be poetic justice if Arsenal now turn round and up the asking-price for Reyes, naturally Madrid will wincingly agree (after all Reyes has provided them with a substantial cash pot). Should they fail to comply, I imagine there will be plenty of suitors queuing up for Jose's services. I say Arsene shold flip Madrid the bird and demand 25M euros for Reyes or sell him to Athletico for half that.. Message: "don't F' with the Gunners, you cunts"....

Haavard off to gunner school

Add to Technorati Favorites

Sky Sports report that Arsenal have sealed their second transfer of the closed season by signing Haarvard Nordveit.

Arsenal have reached an agreement with FK Haugesund to sign starlet Haavard Nordveit, according to reports in Norway.

Arsene Wenger has been keen to tie up a deal for the 16-year-old defender and travelled to Norway earlier this week in hope of sealing his signing.

However, The Gunners had a bid in the region of £1.8million rebuffed by Haugesund, who then invited other top European clubs to table their bids.

Arsenal have now come back with an improved offer of £2million which has been accepted by the Norwegian club.

Nordveit is understood to have agreed a four-year contract at Emirates Stadium and the deal will officially go through on 2nd July.

The young stopper will travel with the rest of the Arsenal squad on their pre-season tour of Asia.

How they backtrack, spin, and rant...these brainless hacks

Add to Technorati Favorites

So Henry was leaving, deal signed, fee agreed...and all this behind Arsenal's back.

Oops, we were wrong! Our survey says xxxxxx! Henry is staying...

Summer after summer, no other player has been the subject of more transfer speculation than Henry, so I'm glad to hear his Agent Jerome Anderson has confirmed he will be pursuing the matter through the courts. It's important as the whole episode has eroded some 'fans' opinion of Henry. While I don't pretend he should return from holiday each time a story surfaces, sure it would be nice to have a firm statement to nip these stories in the bud. Sadly when he has been interviewed, what he says is not what is heard.

So now our derisory sports hacks have turned their attentions to Chelsea, with Gus Hiddink supposedly giving longing glances to Abramovich and Didier Drogba.. (who only a week ago apparently wanted to stay and win titles) is now off? I can't help but think this is only an effort to distract from the 'Henry-leaving' debacle?

Part of the reason here is the clubs have implemented a siege strategy with the media this summer, by feeding them almost nothing in the way of transfer stories this summer - I can't quite remember things being so quiet or covert. Point in case Manchester United's recent transfer of two high profile targets (Anderson and Nani) was carried out without any paper even getting a whiff...boy that must have pissed them off. Starved of any solid information, the media resort to these purely invented transfer mirages.

Another construction of pure fantasy by the press is that Henry supposedly had a poor season, this is pure concoction. Henry scored 10 goals with 6 assists in 17 games, compare this to Dimitar Berbatov who was being brown-nosed by the press at every opportunity only managed 12 goals and 11 assists in 30 appearances!

And based on goals per minutes on pitch if Henry or RVP had played the full season technically one of them might well have beaten Drogba to the golden boot!

  • Robin van persie 132 minutes per goal
  • Henry 147.4 minutes per goal
  • Drogba 147.3 minutes per goal
  • Rooney 208 minutes per goal
  • Berbatov 226 minutes per goal

Simple demonstration of how poor the RESEARCH in sports journalism is....

Alessandro Rosina transfer rumours and transfer news

Add to Technorati Favorites

With Ribery opting for non-champions league, or maybe being pushed by the price-hiking Jean-Michel Aulas. Malouda supposedly being hawked to moneybags Chelsea. A excellent alternative would be Alessandro Rosina - a player we are now linked to. check him out, he is playing in the U21 tournament in Holland. (Also worth looking at Royston Drenthe...in this tournament - a future star without question).

Alessandro Rosina transfer rumours and transfer news: "Rangers are vying with Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Roma for Torino midfielder Alessandro Rosina's signature to help fans forget about the loss of Scott Brown to Celtic"

Alessandro Rosina

We've got to get this guy, got pace, skill, power and confidence. still young and would do very nice on our right wing, a better option than hleb. saw him last night for italy u21's and he looks a great player. discuss...

End product? You betcha..

Won't cost 17million which would make Arsene happy.

If Arsenal sign anyone it should be: Royston Drenthe

Add to Technorati Favorites

Forget Ryan Babel, Royston Drenthe is the star of the Dutch U21 side. This kid has a lot of class, phenomenal class....Damn-it!

Talk about: intelligence, power, acceleration, dribbling skills, passing vision and most importantly end-product, he has it all. Imagine a hybrid of Ronaldhino and Edgar Davids and you are beginning to form a picture of what he could bring to the party.

To be honest I just scratch my head and wonder how someone who was so clearly born to play as an attacking midfielder, could have been so woefully misplaced by his club positionally -- he is currently a Feyenoord's fullback...doh!

Royston Drenthe

At the moment he is currently playing in the U21 competition, and stared in the game against portugal (which also featured Manchester United's new signing Nani...who incedently was totally outclassed by Drenthe).

Drenthe revealed he is content to carry on at Feyenoord, where he has a contract until 2011, though he told uefa.com he dreams of one day playing in England's Premier League. The team who signs this talent up are going to be onto a £30-40 million player in 3-4 years time, ...hopefully that team is Arsenal.....

Arsene Wenger on Norwegian sojourn

Add to Technorati Favorites

So the Mirror and Sun were talking out of the collective butt-holes when they claimed Wenger was off, with Fabregas et al. in tow.

Arsene Wenger, now back on duty, is reported by Arseblogger to be in Norway signing 16 year old defender Haavard Nordtveit (who Manchester United were reportedly interested in). I reported earlier in March that Haavard Nordtveit was considering a move to Arsenal (Haavard Nordtveit ponders his options).

Arsene was snapped here at the grounds watching the young Norwegian play.

Haavard Nordtveit

Clearly a prospect, Nordtveit had already trained with Manchester United but his current club FC Haugesund rejected a bid from the Premiership leaders last November...

Have we solved di problem with Maria?

Add to Technorati Favorites

Boggy sighted on the Arsenal transfer radar... Scramble! Scramble!

Forgive me I get excited. It's been too long since we've had a morsel of a rumour, and like many of you out there I've been running on vapours.

It seems that there are two left-sided wingers stories emerging, with Arseblogger and the wildly erratic ARN both claiming we have stolen the march on Liverpool by signing Florent Malouda. This is good in the light of our missing out on ol' scarface Frank Ribery (who for 17M pounds Bayen Munchen are welcome to). Malouda was voted French player of the year this season and would register that left-wing relationship with Thierry Henry for club and country that was last the ownership of a certain Bobby Pires. So there is a certain happy logic in Arsenal moving for him. With 13 goals in 34 starts (+8 subs) he would certainly answer the "goals from midfield" call.

Ángel Di María, Angel di Maria

While this is interesting other rumours are filtering through that Giles 'the grimster' Grimaldi has been soliciting the services of a certain 19 year old Argentinian who currently plays for Rossario Central - Ángel Di María. "Who??" I hear you collectively say, and no I've never heard of him either...

Atletico eye Gunners youngster

Add to Technorati Favorites

I thought now the Spanish spin-cycle is in er.. full spin, I though it would be nice to make a deconstruction of one of the latest reports...as there really isn't much else going.

Atletico Madrid are 'reportedly' (i.e. as in some bullshit Spanish media report) looking into taking Arsenal midfielder Fran Merida back to Spain on loan next season.

Merida joined The Gunners last summer after opting to leave Barcelona and signed his first professional contract at Emirates Stadium in March.

Arsene Wenger is often willing to let Arsenal's 'top' (i.e. Youngsters Arsene thinks are not good enough) youngsters go out on loan to gain vital experience in preparation for a career in the Premiership.

According to 'Spanish paper Sport' (i.e. Spanish Chinese whisper machine), Wenger met with Atletico officials recently to discuss the possibility of Merida moving to Madrid.

Arsenal are 'expected' (i.e. we're making a total guess here) to make a decision on whether to let the 17-year-old go out on loan to the Vicente Calderon sometime this month.

Fran Merida

I wouldn't put much faith in these reports, naturally they may want him (he did after all star in recent the U-17 tournament which Spain won), sure like Barca & R.Madrid they will try to use the Spanish media but are they going to see Merida next season...the answer is a resounding NO.

Merida has been earmarked for the Arsenal midfield during next season's carling cup, he knows this and is well aware this it how compatriot Fabregas (another player the Barca/Marca have been doing the flamenca about) broke through.

I think Fran has precocious talent, passes well, has a great shot and has a better eye for goal than Fabregas did at the same age...

Henry Interview: "Nobody wanted to stay on the wing"

Add to Technorati Favorites

I like Thierry - he's a straight talker, heart on sleeve and never pulls his punches..which has lead to some criticisms for exuberant use of 'the Gallic stare' in chastising the Arsenal youngsters this season.

From the way he talks about the inibility to overlap on the wing, clearly shows his frustration, I imagine this is something Wenger and Henry will have highlighted as a key priority in bolstering the squad this summer.

Henry had to say:
"I think we did not do enough to give us space, nothing to do with the pitch"

"Sometime when we play at home, nobody wants to stay on the wing (nods right and left) to stretch a team. And that makes a great difference if you are a full-back and the winger is already on the line, ready to make a run behind you, you get scared"

In this interview:
- He highlights his spate of injuries
- The lack of success this season
- The youthfulness of the squad
- The problem with both strikers being injured
- The lack of width at emirates being down to the lack of a natural winger

Gilberto to apply for English Citizenship

Add to Technorati Favorites

Arsenal midfielder Gilberto maintains England will have plenty to think about at Wembley on Friday night other than just stopping Ronaldinho and Kaka.

Brazil trained at the new national stadium on Thursday evening ahead of the friendly, which will mark the first appearance of the full England side at the impressive £800million redeveloped venue.

It was reported here that Gilberto da Silva who has been immense for us this season is currently applying for British citizenship.

Gilberto Brazil, English Citizenship, Wembley 2007

Unfortunately no... he's not joining up with the England squad (certainly not after Captaining Brazil at Wembley, scoring one goal and setting up another). However this virtually blows out of the water any rumours of him leaving Arsenal (something that no Arsenal fan gave serious thought to anyway I might add).

Jeremie Aliadiere off to Middlesborough

Add to Technorati Favorites

Boro were close to signing the French striker in January, but their interest cooled in recent weeks and they looked like going elsewhere.

However, with rivals interest from the Premiership and La Liga - Boro boss Gareth Southgate has again launched a bid.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is willing to do business as Aliadiere - who featured a number of times towards the end of last season - wants regular first-team football.

The 24-year-old has been with Arsenal for eight years and obviously feels the time is now right to move on and Teesside looks set to be his new home.

Boro are in need of new strikers with both Mark Viduka and Yakubu Aiyegbeni looking unlikely to start next season with the club.

Clearly talented it wasn't meant to happen for him at Arsenal, I feel 1-2 years of regular football will do him no end of good, something he's not managed at Arsenal due to injury. If he finds himself again, 'borough will have themselves a very good deal..

Hmm not much to report on this morning

Add to Technorati Favorites

Not much happening today but in a pre-England-v-Brazil Game Gilberto says he expects Henry to stay at Arsenal (as the player himself has iterated several times - which evidently falls on deaf ears).

Arseblogger has an interesting breaking news story on his 'Newspaper'....

Perhaps he should consider a career with the Spanish Press....
